Book Review: The Element by Ken Robinson

Ken Robinson knows you're a genius.  As a respected expert on creativity and self-fulfillment, I'm inclined to pay attention.  In his book, The Element: A New View of Human Capacity, Robinson explains how this is true and what you can do to live up to your full potential.

What is the element?  In his definition the element is "point which natural talent meets personal passion."  It is the thing you do in your free time that feels effortless.  Some people have one element, many have more than one.

Robinson's view is that we all have certain things we excel at, some people understand mathematical equations, some people tell amazing stories, some are ingenious at helping others achieve their goals.  Using real life examples of people who took unique talents to the highest level.  Matt Groening, Arianna Huffington, Paul McCartney are just a few in the roster of people who made success out of unique talents, sometimes despite the odds.  He explains how people are discouraged from following their dreams for "practical" or financial reasons.  Ultimately, however life is only truly satisfying doing what we love.

Inspirational and humorous, this book is not just enlightening it's also a fun read.  There's something so wonderful about recognizing our elements.  If he thinks we're all genius, I'm inclined to agree.
